On Wednesday, the US military announced that the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its accompanying destroyers have arrived in the Middle East.
This deployment comes after Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin directed the strike group to expedite its movement to the region.
With this arrival, the number of US aircraft carriers in the Middle East has temporarily increased to two, reflecting heightened concerns over potential regional military escalation.
Tensions in the region have surged following Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukr in a drone strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs, and the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, which Iran has attributed to Israeli actions.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is set to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the Lincoln, equipped with F-35C and F/A-18 Block III fighters, has entered CENTCOM’s area of responsibility.
The carrier is leading the Third Carrier Strike Group, accompanied by Destroyer Squadron 21 and Carrier Air Wing 9.
The Pentagon had previously announced on August 11 that Secretary Austin had instructed the USS Abraham Lincoln to accelerate its deployment to the Middle East, following an initial order earlier in the month.
The heightened military presence comes amid increasing threats of retaliation from Hezbollah and Iran following the recent assassinations in Lebanon and Iran.
