On Friday, the Emergency Room of Babanusa City in the state of West Kordofan, Sudan, reported that intense clashes have persisted within the city for the fourth consecutive day, leading to the loss of 32 lives and leaving 22 individuals injured.
Ahmed Azraq, a member of Babanusa’s Emergency Room, informed the Arab World News Agency that the casualty count is likely to rise due to the presence of several missing persons.
He also highlighted the disruption of the city’s communication network, making it difficult to contact families within the city who are unable to leave.
Eyewitnesses have confirmed that the clashes are ongoing between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who are attempting to take control of the 22nd Infantry Division, the army’s headquarters in the state. The RSF forces are seeking to extend their influence to the southwestern states of the country.
Thursday evening witnessed “bodies of soldiers and civilians lying on the roads, with no one able to approach them due to the ongoing battles without resolution,” as reported by the Middle East newspaper.
Witnesses also mentioned that military aircraft belonging to the army carried out airstrikes in the Unity, Education, and Abu Ismail neighborhoods surrounding the 22nd Infantry Division’s headquarters.
The conflict, which has also affected residential neighborhoods, has triggered a widespread wave of displacement from the area. Markets have closed, and hospitals and medical centers have ceased operations since the outbreak of the clashes earlier this week.
As the fighting intensifies, the number of displaced individuals leaving the city has grown substantially. Azraq noted that a significant number of fleeing families have sought refuge in the nearby cities of Al-Majalid and Al-Fula, with reports of looting incidents during their escape.
The situation in Babanusa City remains a matter of grave concern, as efforts to restore peace and provide assistance to affected residents are urgently needed.
