U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed on Saturday that the United States did not participate in Israel’s recent strikes on Beirut. In a statement issued by the Pentagon, Austin clarified that there was no prior warning or coordination regarding the operation.
“I received no advance notice,” Austin said. “I spoke earlier by phone with my Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant. However, the call took place after the Israeli operation was already underway.”
Austin further noted that Israel is still assessing the situation. “As you know, they are continuing to evaluate the circumstances, so I do not have any additional information or details at this time,” he said. “You’ve heard me say many times that all-out war must be avoided.”
Emphasizing diplomacy as the most effective course of action, Austin added, “Diplomacy remains the best and quickest path to enable displaced Israeli and Lebanese citizens to return to their homes on both sides of the border.”
He concluded by stating, “I will speak with Gallant again soon and look forward to receiving updates when we have that conversation.”
