Former US President Donald Trump swiftly reacted to the media reports concerning potential charges against him over a ‘classified documents’ issue. Trump stated on his social media network, ‘Truth Social’, “No one has told me that I am accused, and I should not be because I have made no mistakes.”
Earlier, several American media outlets reported that the Federal Prosecutor’s office had informed Trump’s defense attorneys that their client is under investigation regarding his handling of classified documents after his departure from the White House. This move paves the way for potential charges against him.
Publications such as The New York Times, CNN, and others have reported that Trump’s attorneys received this notification from the office of Prosecutor General Jack Smith, indicating that the investigation is inching closer to potentially charging the former president, who harbors aspirations to return to the White House in the next year’s elections.
Trump is accused of taking with him several boxes of official documents, including defense documents classified as ‘highly secret’, when he left the White House in early 2021. When requested by the officials in charge of the Presidential Archive to return them for storage as mandated by law, he reportedly refused, thus allegedly violating federal laws.
The American media did not specify when the former president’s lawyers received this notification. However, CNN stated that Trump’s defense attorneys met with officials at the Justice Department on Monday.
The news network reported that Prosecutor General Jack Smith, tasked with independently supervising the investigation into this case, was among the department officials who met Trump’s lawyers.
