Lithuania’s Interior Ministry announced on Monday that it plans to strengthen the country’s border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region this year by upgrading border infrastructure and surveillance systems, and by hiring more border guards.

In an interview with the Baltic News Service, Lithuanian Interior Minister Agnė Bilotaitė said, “Our priority this year is to strengthen the border with the Russian Federation.” She noted that there is already a standing border fence and surveillance system, but the government plans to upgrade the infrastructure and increase the number of surveillance systems, drones, and officers.

Bilotaitė added that her ministry is working to have 244 additional border guards begin working in the New Year.

The Lithuanian Interior Minister was visiting the border area of the State Border Guard Service’s Coast Guard, which was re-established on January 1, 2024.
