Lebanon’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York announced that it has filed a formal complaint with both UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Security Council following an Israeli invasion that breached Lebanese sovereignty.
The complaint, lodged in the wake of a ground invasion initiated by Israel on the night of October 1, 2024, accuses Israel of violating the 2000 Blue Line and disregarding the core principles of UN Resolution 1701.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, the complaint details repeated Israeli breaches of the resolution since its adoption in 2006. It highlighted the ongoing aggression from Israel, noting a marked increase in hostilities since October 8, 2023.
Lebanese officials report that Israel’s military actions have targeted civilians, aid workers, and journalists, with random bombings of towns and villages amounting to 8,570 air strikes leading to 1,928 deaths and 9,290 injuries, including a significant number of children and women.
The complaint also underscores the humanitarian crisis induced by the Israeli attacks, driving approximately 1.2 million civilians to displacement.
Lebanon has urged the Security Council to condemn the Israeli land invasion and its continued aggression, calling for Israel to fully adhere to Resolution 1701, withdraw from all occupied Lebanese territories, and respect Lebanon’s internationally recognized sovereignty and borders.
Lebanon reaffirms its commitment to implementing all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 1701, and to exercising full state authority over its internationally recognized territory.
Israel declared Guterres “persona non grata”, criticising him for not explicitly condemning Iran’s missile attack on Israel.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz stated, “Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack on Israel does not deserve to step foot on Israeli soil.”
Katz also accused Guterres of supporting terrorist groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, and labeled Iran as the “mothership of global terror.”
