Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati warned that up to one million people could be displaced as a result of Israel’s ongoing attacks.
Speaking in Beirut, Mikati said this marks the largest displacement in the country’s history, emphasizing that diplomacy is the only solution to the current conflict with Israel: “We have no choice but diplomacy.”
According to the United Nations, over 210,000 people have already been displaced since the renewed confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah began, with 120,000 displaced just last week. However, the UN suggests the actual number could be significantly higher, drawing comparisons to the 2006 war with Israel.
Many of the displaced are living in parks, streets, or beaches, fleeing attacks in southern and eastern Lebanon and around the capital, Beirut. Additionally, around 50,000 Syrians and Lebanese have fled to Syria, seeking safety from the violence.
