Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati has urged the Lebanese Army and General Security to tighten security measures along the country’s border with Syria.
This request comes in response to Israeli claims alleging that the “Masnaa” border crossing is being used for the transfer of military equipment into Lebanon.
In a statement released by the Prime Minister’s office, Mikati communicated directly with Army Commander General Joseph Aoun and Acting Director General of General Security Major General Elias Bechara, emphasizing the need for heightened security protocols at the Lebanese-Syrian border.
The request reflects ongoing concerns about border security, particularly in light of the complex geopolitical situation in the region.
Lebanon shares a lengthy border with Syria, which has been a focal point for various security issues, including the movement of arms and the influx of refugees since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
Israel has frequently expressed worries regarding the transfer of weapons to militant groups in Lebanon, particularly Hezbollah, which is based in southern Lebanon and has been involved in numerous confrontations with Israeli forces.
The Masnaa border crossing, one of the most significant entry points between Lebanon and Syria, has been under scrutiny due to these allegations.
This situation is further complicated by the ongoing tensions in the region, particularly after recent escalations between Israel and militant factions.
Mikati’s call for increased vigilance underscores the Lebanese government’s efforts to address security concerns while managing the delicate balance of relations with its neighbor Syria and the international community.
