Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati criticized the recent decision of the European Parliament to support the stay of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, stating that it violates Lebanon’s sovereignty.
During the International Conference on Development and Migration in Rome, Mikati expressed disappointment with the resolution, emphasizing that it overlooks Lebanon’s complexities and challenges.
He highlighted the severe repercussions of the long-term presence of Syrian refugees, which has destabilized the country’s social fabric and posed a direct threat to Lebanon’s model of diversity.
Lebanon remains the country hosting the largest number of refugees per capita, and Lebanese officials are calling for the voluntary and dignified return of Syrian refugees to their homeland due to internal security and economic concerns.
