During a phone call on Thursday, Jordan’s King Abdullah II reiterated to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides that stopping the war on Gaza is essential to prevent further escalation in the region.

The leaders emphasized the need for intensified international efforts to achieve an immediate and lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

King Abdullah highlighted the importance of Cyprus and the European Union’s efforts in pushing for comprehensive calm and renewed his call for the international community to enhance humanitarian response in Gaza.

The Jordanian King also underscored the necessity of working towards a political horizon to achieve just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution. The call also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between Jordan and Cyprus.

Since the October 7 war, Jordan has taken significant steps to support Gaza and push for peace. Jordan has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts, leading initiatives at the United Nations General Assembly to call for a ceasefire. A resolution for an immediate and sustainable humanitarian truce was passed with Jordan’s backing, although it was ignored by Israel, which launched a ground offensive the same day.

Domestically, King Abdullah II has firmly stated that Jordan will not accept new Palestinian refugees, marking this as a red line to prevent any displacement from Gaza into Jordan. This stance is shared by Egypt and aims to prevent the further marginalization of Palestinian issues.

Jordan has also mobilized significant humanitarian aid to Gaza, coordinating with international bodies and advocating for increased humanitarian assistance from the global community. The Jordanian public has shown strong solidarity with Palestinians, with widespread protests and support activities, despite the government’s efforts to control and contain these demonstrations to maintain stability.
