Algerian authorities have halted the printing of a local newspaper and initiated procedures to permanently shut it down after it published “misleading information” in its latest issue, the Ministry of Communication announced on Thursday.
The Ministry cited violations of Algeria’s press laws and summoned the paper’s director and executive director for questioning regarding the publication.
Reports indicate the controversy stems from an article speculating on an alleged assassination plot against President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Tebboune recently won a second term in an election marked by low voter turnout.
