Tunisia held discussions with Mauritania and Kenya on Tuesday, focusing on irregular migration and enhancing cooperation in various fields.
In separate meetings, Tunisian Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani met with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and Kenyan President William Ruto during the first Korea-Africa Summit in Seoul. The Tunisian government issued separate statements regarding these meetings.
The statement highlighted the long-standing and strong fraternal ties between Tunisia and Mauritania, emphasizing their commitment to developing cooperation between the two nations. The discussions included exploring comprehensive continental solutions to irregular migration under the African Union’s umbrella.
Mauritania serves as a major transit point for African migrants, with the city of Nouadhibou becoming a preferred crossing point for migrants heading to Europe.
Meanwhile, Tunisia has experienced a significant increase in irregular migration to Europe, particularly to Italy, driven by economic and political challenges in sub-Saharan Africa.
In a second statement, the Tunisian government noted that Hachani emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation with Kenya in various sectors, including higher education and digitalization, during his meeting with President Ruto. He highlighted the dynamic and diverse nature of bilateral cooperation.
President Ruto expressed his desire to strengthen cooperation with Tunisia in various fields, stressing the need for consultation and coordination within the framework of the European Union to address common issues, including combating climate change.
On Monday, Hachani chaired the Tunisian delegation at the first Korea-Africa Summit, held under the theme “The Future We Create: Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity,” hosted in Seoul.
