UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has called on Iran to use its influence to reduce the escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly with the Houthi rebels and other militia groups in the region.

Shapps made the statement on the X platform, emphasizing the importance of Iran’s role in fostering de-escalation.

“We urge Iran to use their influence to de-escalate, including with the Houthis and other militia groups in the region,” Shapps stated. He further highlighted ongoing collaborative efforts with the US to promote stability in the Middle East.

In line with this approach, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron is set to travel to Oman to address the issue of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and advocate for de-escalation in the Middle East. During his visit, Cameron will meet with his counterpart Badr Albusaidi to discuss strategies for diminishing tensions across the region.

The focus of Cameron’s discussions will include the Houthi attacks on international shipping lines in the Red Sea. The British Foreign Office emphasized that Cameron will reaffirm the UK’s commitment to delivering aid to Yemen and outline actions taken by Britain to deter Houthi targeting of ships in the Red Sea.
