The Chief of the Lebanese Army, General Joseph Aoun, announced on Tuesday that the Israeli military is bombarding southern Lebanese border villages and towns with internationally prohibited ammunition. This alarming declaration was reported by the Lebanese News Agency, highlighting a dire situation on the eve of Lebanon’s 80th Independence Day.

General Aoun, in a statement to military personnel, expressed grave concerns over the escalating violence. “We are witnessing a highly dangerous situation,” he said. “The Israeli enemy continues to commit the most horrific massacres, with unprecedented bloodshed against the Palestinian people. Additionally, there are repeated assaults on our nation’s sovereignty and our people in the southern border villages and towns, using internationally banned ammunition. This, coupled with the ongoing occupation of Lebanese territories, poses a significant threat.”

He added that Lebanon faces severe challenges on various fronts, negatively impacting state institutions, including the military. “The military institution stands at a pivotal and sensitive stage amidst political tensions,” he stated. “The national interest demands that its integrity be untouched, ensuring its continuity, cohesion, and the morale of its soldiers.”

This recent development adds to the existing tensions in the region. The use of internationally banned weapons, if confirmed, could escalate the conflict and draw international attention and condemnation. Lebanon’s ongoing political and economic crises compound the situation, placing additional strain on its military and state institutions.

The international community has long monitored the volatile situation along the Israel-Lebanon border. This latest incident underlines the fragility of peace in the region and the need for diplomatic efforts to address these challenges.

General Aoun’s remarks serve as a reminder of the complexities and dangers that nations face along disputed borders, especially in areas with a history of conflict. The situation in Lebanon requires careful monitoring, as developments could have far-reaching implications for regional stability and international relations.
