US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, recently announced that the US is working towards normalizing diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel with an aim to broker a transformational agreement. However, the process is fraught with challenges concerning numerous details, including the Palestinian issue.

When quizzed about the potential deal, Blinken told journalists, “It remains a tough proposal. We are collectively working on it. The details of any agreement involving multiple parties pose challenges. While I believe it’s very possible, it’s not at all certain. But we feel the benefits, if achieved, will certainly be worth the effort put in.”

Blinken was also questioned on whether the deal was worth the US’s effort, especially in light of Saudi Arabia’s recent decision against increasing oil production and Israel’s continued push to expand controversial settlements. He responded that the Biden administration anticipates progress on several concerns the US has in any agreement reached between the two nations.

The US Secretary of State also highlighted that a Saudi-Israeli agreement would further stabilize the Middle East. He emphasized that mutual recognition by both nations would have a significant ripple effect throughout the region.

Blinken added, “We have often been drawn to that region when it was in turmoil, when it was in conflict. The harmony achieved through integration will be uniquely positive.”
