In a tragic event near the Israel-Egypt border on Saturday morning, two Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers – one male and one female – were killed during a shootout, according to an IDF statement.

The details of the incident are being reviewed as security in the region remains heightened.

Earlier reports on Saturday indicated two individuals were injured and their status was uncertain.

As the day progressed, the IDF confirmed an active exchange of gunfire near the Egypt border. Israeli forces retaliated against the attacker who targeted the two soldiers, resulting in the assailant’s death. The IDF continues its comprehensive surveillance of the area to prevent any further threats.

This incident prompted an immediate response from top Israeli officials. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi, and other security officials held a situation assessment meeting in the wake of the developments on Saturday afternoon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also been kept abreast of the situation.

Al-Arabiya, a Saudi media outlet, reported that in response to the confirmed reports of border shooting, Egyptian and Israeli security forces are coordinating their efforts.

In an unrelated event in the same vicinity the previous evening, IDF foiled an attempted drug smuggling operation, confiscating drugs worth over 1.5 million shekels. As investigations continue, Israeli forces remain vigilant to ensure the safety and security of the region.
