The Niger Ministry of Defense announced the death of 17 soldiers in an attack near the border with Mali, according to the French news agency (AFP).
The news agency had earlier reported the killing of 26 members of Nigerien security forces in an ambush.
The AFP further detailed that the ambush targeted two helicopters near the northern border with Niger, resulting in the death of 26 security personnel.
In related regional tensions, both Mali and Burkina Faso have openly voiced their opposition to any military intervention in Niger.
They have deemed such interventions tantamount to a “declaration of war” against them. Following a statement released by the Economic Group last week, both countries threatened to withdraw from ECOWAS.
This escalation underscores the volatile situation in the region and the complexities of maintaining peace and security near the Mali-Niger border.
