U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, in a phone call with his Israeli counterpart, urged the assurance of safety and security for the UNIFIL and Lebanese armed forces. This comes in light of reports that Israeli forces had fired upon UN peacekeeping sites in Lebanon.

Recent reports have highlighted Israel’s attacks on UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, particularly targeting UNIFIL positions. These attacks, which include firing upon and hitting an observation tower, have resulted in injuries to peacekeepers and significant disruptions to their operations. These actions have raised serious concerns about violations of international law and have led to calls for investigations into these incidents. Human Rights Watch and other international entities have emphasized the necessity of respecting the safety and security of UN personnel, underscoring that such attacks could amount to war crimes.

The recent situation in Lebanon has deteriorated significantly due to escalating Israeli military actions. Over the past year, Israeli attacks have resulted in more than 2,141 deaths and 10,099 injuries. The intensity of these strikes has expanded, affecting various regions within Lebanon and leading to substantial casualties and widespread destruction .

In a dramatic escalation, the conflict has seen Israeli forces expand their ground operations into Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah strongholds and other strategic locations. This has not only exacerbated the humanitarian crisis but has also heightened tensions in the region, prompting international concerns and calls for restraint.

The Lebanese government and health ministries have reported severe impacts on civilian populations, with extensive damage to infrastructure and significant displacement. The ongoing conflict continues to pose severe challenges to emergency response efforts and exacerbates the public health crisis in the region.
