A military delegation led by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has arrived in North Korea, the Russian Defense Ministry announced in an official statement released on Wednesday.
The delegation was warmly received at Sunan International Airport, located in the outskirts of the capital, Pyongyang, with an official ceremony that included the participation of the Korean People’s Army Honor Guard.
General Kang Sun-nam, the North Korean Defense Minister, welcomed Shoigu upon his arrival at the airport.
The Russian military delegation is participating in dedicated celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Korean people’s victory in the Korean War of National Liberation, which took place from 1950 to 1953.
The Russian defense ministry emphasized that this visit will contribute to strengthening the military ties between Russia and North Korea, representing a significant milestone in the development of cooperation between the two nations.
Meanwhile, North Korea is also set to receive a high-level delegation from China during this week.
The delegation is arriving to participate in the annual celebrations marking the end of the Korean War.
This visit is believed to be the first by foreign officials to Pyongyang since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
