23 people were killed and over 40 others were injured when the Sudanese army shelled a market near one of the main camps of the Rapid Support Forces in Khartoum, according to the capital’s emergency rooms.
The Emergency Rooms, a youth initiative providing humanitarian aid to civilians affected by the war in Sudan, confirmed in a statement posted on their official Facebook page that “23 confirmed deaths and more than 40 injuries were transported” to three hospitals following the Saturday noon bombing of the central market in southern Khartoum.
The market is located in an area controlled by the Rapid Support Forces near their main camp in the Sports City area of southern Khartoum.
Since Friday, the intensity of the confrontations in Khartoum, which is largely under the control of the Rapid Support Forces, has increased, with the army’s aircraft bombing the center and south of the capital. The army forces managed to advance from Omdurman towards the western part of the capital, where clashes with all types of weapons occurred on Saturday, according to witnesses.
Tens of thousands have been killed and millions displaced since the outbreak of war in mid-April 2023 between the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, also the head of the Sovereignty Council, and the Rapid Support Forces led by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
On Friday, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) warned of a food security crisis in Sudan and called on both sides of the conflict to allow access to humanitarian aid, describing the situation as a “nightmare.” According to the organization, about 26 million people are facing severe food insecurity, or “nearly half the population.”
