In a covert operation, the United States has supplied Ukraine with long-range ballistic missiles, enabling Ukrainian forces to strike Russian targets from unprecedented distances. American officials revealed on Wednesday that Ukraine has initiated the use of these missiles, launching attacks on a Russian military airfield in Crimea and targeting Russian forces in another occupied area.
This marks the first deployment of the long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to Ukraine, significantly extending the country’s striking capabilities. Compared to the mid-range version previously provided by the U.S., which had a range of approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles), the new missiles grant Ukraine a nearly double striking distance of up to 300 kilometers (190 miles).
The decision to provide the long-range ATACMS was authorized by President Joe Biden in February, with a subsequent allocation of a “significant” number of missiles in a $300 million aid package announced in March. The total aid package amounts to approximately $1 billion, although the exact number of missiles provided remains undisclosed by U.S. officials.
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan affirmed the ongoing support for Ukraine, stating that additional missiles will be dispatched following the recent authorization and funding. However, the delivery of these missiles was kept discreet, with even lawmakers unaware of their presence in Ukraine until recently.
U.S. officials had initially hesitated to provide Ukraine with long-range missiles, fearing potential escalation of the conflict and Russian retaliation. However, after careful deliberation, military planners determined that the timing was appropriate to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
Admiral Christopher Grady, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, emphasized the strategic advantage of the long-range weapons in targeting Russian logistics and troop concentrations beyond the front lines. He assured that the weapons would be used exclusively within Ukrainian sovereign territory, in accordance with directives from President Biden.
The introduction of these sophisticated weapons underscores the ongoing support from the U.S. for Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression. However, it also raises concerns about the potential for further escalation and the delicate balance of power in the region.
