According to a US media report, the government predicts that the Israeli campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip is heading into a new phase in the coming days. This prediction, relayed by CNN from a senior government official in Washington on Friday (local time), suggests that President Joe Biden’s administration foresees a reduction in aerial strikes, with a more tactical focus shifting towards ground operations. The primary objective of this shift is likely aimed at dismantling the extensive network of underground tunnels operated by Hamas.

As humanitarian aid continues to flow into the Gaza Strip, the US government anticipates a decline in massive Israeli aerial bombardments that have been witnessed thus far. This projection comes in the backdrop of ongoing attacks since October 7th, led by Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip. Israel states that it has targeted over 12,000 sites in the coastal region in retaliation. Concurrently, ground forces are also advancing against Hamas operatives and military objectives in the area.

Israel has been vocal about its intentions to eliminate Hamas, especially after its fighters launched a brutal campaign across Israeli towns bordering Gaza, resulting in 1,400 fatalities and the captivity of 249 individuals. Subsequent to these attacks, Israel escalated its aerial bombardments on the coastal strip and intensified its ground offensive.

This situation unfolds amidst a longstanding turbulent history between Israel and Palestine, with Gaza often being a focal point of conflict. The dense network of tunnels in Gaza, used by Hamas, has long been a strategic challenge. These tunnels facilitate the movement and operation of Hamas fighters, thereby posing a significant security threat to Israel.

The US’s anticipation of a shift in Israeli military strategy reflects the complexity and the evolving nature of the conflict. As ground operations become more pronounced, the focus on destroying underground networks illustrates a strategic move to incapacitate Hamas’s operational capabilities from the roots. Meanwhile, the continuous influx of humanitarian aid indicates a recognition of the dire living conditions faced by civilians in Gaza amidst the ongoing conflict.

This emerging military strategy underscores the multifaceted approach needed to address the security threats while also considering the humanitarian aspect of the situation. The unfolding scenario in Gaza also resonates with the broader geopolitical context of the Israel-Palestine conflict, which continues to draw global attention and concern.
