UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon warned on Sunday that the region is nearing an “imminent disaster” amid escalating tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, emphasizing that a military solution will benefit no side.
The international coordinator, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, stated on the X platform, “As the region approaches an imminent disaster, it cannot be emphasized enough that there is no military solution that will provide safety for any party.”
The death toll from the Israeli airstrike targeting a meeting of Hezbollah military officials in the southern suburbs of Beirut has risen to 45, according to a new report by the Lebanese Ministry of Health on Sunday, as debris removal operations continue for the third consecutive day.
The Ministry in a statement reported an increase in “the number of deaths to 45 people,” noting the continuation of “debris removal operations” alongside forensic experts “taking samples” from bodies in hospitals to identify the deceased.
The ministry had earlier reported 37 deaths, including at least 16 who were officially mourned by Hezbollah, among them two prominent military leaders.
