The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has welcomed the upcoming meeting between members of the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State in Cairo on July 18.
In a statement released today, UNSMIL expressed support for all efforts aimed at achieving Libyan consensus to facilitate a political process that is led and owned by Libyans, ultimately leading to national elections through comprehensive and inclusive steps with a clear roadmap.
The mission encouraged members of both councils to participate in the Cairo meeting to build on previous agreements and adopt an inclusive approach that involved other relevant Libyan parties.
This approach aims to ensure that the outcomes of their meeting result in a politically viable solution.
UNSMIL reiterated its commitment, under the mandate of UN Security Council Resolution 2702 (2023), to continue its efforts towards reaching the necessary political agreement in Libya to address all contentious issues.
The Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, recently asserted that the solution to Libya’s ongoing crisis lies in conducting both presidential and parliamentary elections.
Saleh emphasized that the House has fulfilled all its obligations by issuing the 13th constitutional amendment and enacting laws for presidential and parliamentary elections.
These measures aim to reflect the will of the Libyan people without exclusion or marginalization.
Saleh stated, “The solution in Libya will only come through holding presidential and parliamentary elections, allowing Libyans to freely choose through fair and transparent elections.
A unified government across the country must organize and supervise these elections, thereby uniting all divisions for the benefit of the Libyan people.”
