During the early morning hours of Saturday, armed factions launched two rocket attacks on the American base at the Conoco gas field in northern Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that over ten rockets were fired from areas controlled by the government and Iran-backed groups, targeting the U.S. base.
In response, the U.S. forces employed heavy artillery and were supported by the aerial patrols of the international coalition forces shortly after the base was targeted. This marks the second time the base has been targeted within 24 hours, highlighting a pattern of ongoing assaults.
The Observatory also disclosed that the nine U.S. bases in Syria have been subjected to 132 attacks by Iran-supported groups since October 19th of the previous year.
The Conoco gas field in Deir Ezzor is a strategic location often targeted due to its significance in Syria’s oil-rich region. The presence of U.S. military bases there is part of the broader effort to counter ISIS and influence regional stability. The area has been a focal point for conflict involving various actors including Syrian government forces, Iranian-backed militias, and remnants of ISIS. The recurring attacks on U.S. bases in the region reflect ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran-backed entities in Syria, highlighting the complex interplay of local and international interests in Syria’s protracted conflict. These incidents underscore the fragile security environment in Syria, where external powers and local factions vie for control and influence over key resources and territories.
