OpenAI Acquires “Global Illumination“ to Bolster ChatGPT Development

OpenAI announced on Wednesday its acquisition of the digital products company, Global Illumination. This marks the first known acquisition made by the renowned artificial intelligence company.

The financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

OpenAI stated, “The entire Global Illumination team has joined OpenAI to work on our core products, including ChatGPT,” according to Reuters.

Global Illumination was founded by Thomas Dimson, Taylor Gordon, and Joey Flynn, and is based in New York. They have all previously worked at the Meta Platforms-owned Instagram.

Recently, Global Illumination has been working on open-source technology related to online gaming.

Dimson is credited for writing some of the original algorithms for content categorization on Instagram, according to his personal website.
