Norway announced on Monday that it will be sending forces to the Red Sea to participate in a task force led by the United States aimed at protecting commercial ships, according to Reuters.
Earlier in the day, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who is currently visiting Israel, stated that Iran’s support for Houthi attacks on commercial vessels must cease.
In a statement before his meeting with the Israeli Security Cabinet, Austin said, “We are leading a multinational task force in the Red Sea to support the fundamental principle of freedom of navigation.
Iran’s support for Houthi attacks on commercial ships must cease.”
He also emphasized America’s commitment to Israel, stating, “Our commitment to Israel is strong. We will continue to provide the equipment necessary for you to defend the country.”
Norway’s decision to deploy forces to the Red Sea underscores the international effort to safeguard maritime trade routes in the region and address security concerns arising from recent events.
