Lebanon announced on Wednesday that its permanent mission to the United Nations has filed a complaint against Israel with the UN Security Council, accusing it of intentionally killing journalists, as reported by the newspaper “Al-Sharq Al-Awsat.”
The Lebanese Foreign Ministry stated in a release that the complaint followed Israel’s “new defined crime of deliberately killing the journalists Farah Omar and the photographer Rabie Maamari, who were working for Al Mayadeen channel, in addition to the Lebanese citizen Hussein Aqil.”
The statement emphasized that the Israeli strike, which took place deep inside Lebanese territory and far from the Blue Line, constitutes a blatant violation of international law in all its aspects, a breach of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and an attack on civilians.
Lebanon has requested the UN Security Council to take responsibility for condemning Israel due to its commitment to this described crime. Earlier, Al Mayadeen channel had mourned its correspondent Farah Omar and the photographer Rabie Maamari, who were killed in an Israeli strike targeting a group of journalists in southern Lebanon.
Last week, Israel prohibited Al Mayadeen channel from broadcasting in areas under its control, accusing it of “attempting to harm Israeli security interests during wartime and serving the enemy’s objectives.”
