Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take immediate action against Israel following Israeli Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s recent call to build a synagogue on the grounds of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City.
Ben-Gvir’s proposal, which he claims would ensure equal rights for Muslims and Jews, violates UN resolutions and the status quo of Al-Aqsa, according to Jordan.
“We urge the Security Council and the international community to take immediate effective action to stop the illegal Israeli measures that violate the historical and legal status quo at Jerusalem’s Holy Sites,” Safadi wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. He emphasized that as the occupying power, Israel is legally responsible for protecting the historical and legal status quo.
