Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi commenced an official three-day visit to Egypt on Monday.

Throughout his stay, he will engage with top Egyptian officials and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ambassador Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

The Deputy Head of Japan’s Embassy in Cairo and Minister Plenipotentiary, Takada Katsonobu, remarked in a press statement on Sunday that Minister Hayashi’s journey to Egypt is part of a regional tour, which also includes stops in Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

“Considering Egypt’s pivotal role in the Middle East, there is a mutual interest to fortify bilateral relations, which were elevated to a strategic level during the visit of Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, to Egypt last April,” added Katsonobu.

He elaborated that the purpose of this visit was to monitor significant developments in relations between Egypt and Japan.

Key agenda items include renewing direct flights between Cairo and Tokyo, amplifying the number of Japanese schools in Egypt, the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the expansion of the Asian country’s investments in Egypt.

Last July, the Japanese Ambassador to Egypt, Oka Hiroshi, affirmed that more companies and institutions in Japan are keen on exploring the available investment opportunities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE).
