The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported, citing sources, that Israel plans to act against armed groups in Iraq following the killing of two soldiers and the injury of others by a drone in the Golan Heights. Sky News Arabia relayed from the Israeli source that Israel will respond appropriately to the drone attack on its soldiers in the Golan or otherwise. It’s evident that Iran is activating all possible fronts, and Israel must be prepared for more surprises.
The Israeli military announced on Friday the death of two soldiers from the Golani Brigade in northern Israel, attributing the attack to a drone launched from Iraq. Israeli military radio stated that the deaths of the Israeli soldiers on Tuesday and Wednesday night resulted from a drone explosion launched from Iraq at a military base in northern Golan, which also injured 23 other soldiers.
Yedioth Ahronoth disclosed that the soldiers killed in the attack, claimed by the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq,” were Sergeant Daniel Aviv Haim Soffer (19 years old) and Corporal Tal Dror (19 years old).
Since the outbreak of the Gaza war, Iraqi factions, particularly those backed by Iran, have escalated their military activities against Israel. These factions, including the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) and its component groups like Kata’ib Hezbollah, have intensified their operations, launching attacks from areas south of Baghdad and near the Iraqi-Syrian border. These attacks are part of a broader regional strategy by Iran to challenge Israel, supporting fronts in Lebanon and Gaza to exert military pressure on Israel and reduce its operations in these regions.
The Iraqi factions have historically played a significant role in regional conflicts, often aligning with Iran’s strategic objectives. Their involvement has grown from participating in the Syrian civil war to directly engaging Israeli targets, marking a significant shift in their operational focus. This change reflects Iran’s broader strategy to mobilize its allies against Israel, especially following the intense conflicts involving Gaza and Hezbollah
