Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, on Sunday, accused the United States of being complicit in the assassination of Lebanese Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, vowing, “Nasrallah’s assassination will not go unanswered.” The Iranian Foreign Minister stated that Israel will not enjoy peace due to its actions in Lebanon.
Araghchi warned of a “state of alert due to the risk of a large-scale war in the region,” cautioning that the region is undergoing a very dangerous and concerning situation. He also remarked that the Security Council has proven incapable of resolving these issues.
Hezbollah, supported by Iran, confirmed on Saturday the killing of its Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in a violent Israeli raid on the southern Beirut suburb, a stronghold of the group. Iran had requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Saturday following the assassination of Hezbollah’s Secretary-General in an Israeli raid on the southern Beirut suburb.
In a message to the 15-member Security Council, the Iranian envoy to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, strongly warned against any attacks on its diplomatic premises and representatives, in violation of the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises. He emphasized that Iran would not tolerate any repetition of such aggression.
Iravani also stated, “Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent rights under international law to take all necessary measures to defend its national interests and vital security.”
The Iranian ambassador called on the Security Council to “take immediate and decisive action to stop the Israeli aggression and prevent the region from being dragged into a comprehensive war,” as reported by Agence France-Presse.
