In a surprising move, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has selected former Prime Minister David Cameron as the country’s new Foreign Secretary, as part of a cabinet reshuffle in anticipation of next year’s general elections.
As Sunak makes adjustments to his team, he appointed James Cleverly as the new Home Secretary, replacing the controversial and ousted Suvila Braverman. Sunak had faced mounting pressure to remove Braverman amid accusations that she had exacerbated tensions during weeks of pro-Palestinian protests and counter-protests in the United Kingdom.
Sunak had appointed Braverman to the ministerial position after assuming the premiership just over a year ago. Following her removal, Braverman stated, “Serving as Home Secretary was the greatest honor of my life. I will make further statements at the appropriate time.”
This dismissal coincides with the governing Conservative Party’s announcement of a cabinet reshuffle, including key portfolios, for the first time since the current government was formed on October 25, 2022.
In a statement released by the party via Ex, it stated, “Today, Rishi Sunak strengthens his government team to make decisions for the long-term prosperity of the country.”
