Leaders of the European Union have given the go-ahead on Thursday to initiate negotiations for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s membership in the bloc, which will commence following the implementation of several reforms by this Balkan nation.
Charles Michel, President of the European Council, extended congratulations to Bosnia and Herzegovina, affirming that their place within the European family was secured.
He noted that the decision marked a significant milestone on their journey towards the European Union, and emphasized that the hard work must persist.
The decision, made by the twenty-seven member states whose leaders convened at a summit in Brussels, represents the latest progression in the EU’s enlargement strategy.
In a collective statement, the leaders announced that, in accordance with the recommendation of the Commission dated March 12, 2024, the European Council had decided to commence accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
They urged the Commission to draft the negotiation framework for approval by the Council (of the European Union) upon the completion of all necessary measures outlined in the Commission’s recommendation dated October 12, 2022.
Discussions cannot commence until all member state governments endorse this negotiation framework.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a population of 3.5 million, attained candidate status in 2022 after receiving a favorable evaluation from the Commission, which identified 14 “key priorities” for reforms.
It was mentioned that these reforms included enhancing the performance of central institutions, strengthening the rule of law and fundamental rights, and combating corruption and organized crime in this country, which ranks among the poorest in Europe.
