Egypt celebrated a historic victory, as it topped the medal table at the African Fencing Championships, held from June 19th to 23rd at the Hassan Mustafa sports hall in 6th of October city.
Egypt’s Pharaohs dominated the podium, securing a total of 21 medals, including 10 gold, 5 silver, and 6 bronze medals. This achievement marks the best result in Egypt’s history in the African championships and the top performance at the continental championships worldwide.
The gold medalists included Ziad Al-Sisi and Mohamed Yasin for epee fencing, Yara Al-Sharqawi and Mohamed Hamza for sabre fencing, along with six team medals across various categories for both men and women.
Adham Moataz, Nada Hafez, Mohamed El-Sayed, Noura Munir, and Alaa Abouelkassem, all fencing with the epee, and sabre took home the silver medals. Meanwhile, the bronze medals were claimed by Aya Hussein, Mohamed Amer, Mariam El-Deghidi in epee fencing, Ahmed El-Sayed in foil fencing, along with Mohamed Hassan and Abdelrahman Talba in sabre fencing.
It’s worth mentioning that the Egyptian fencing team also secured 21 medals at last year’s championship, including 8 gold, 6 silver, and 7 bronze medals, held in Morocco in 2022.
The fencing team included Mustafa Nahad, Maher Hamza, and Valerio Aspromonte for sabre; Jamal Abdel-Latif, Mahmoud Jendiya, and Vincent Anstett for epee; and Sayed Sami, Sameh Magdy for foil fencing. Additionally, Dr. Mohamed El-Gamal was the load planner, Mohamed Sabri the physical trainer, Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Latif the psychological trainer, Dr. Ayman Ghneim the administrative director of the team, Amr Al-Sharqawi the epee and foil administrator, and Mohamed Fahmi the sabre administrator.
The medical team was comprised of Dr. Hassan Kamal, the head of the medical team, Dr. Mohamed El-Shishtawy, Dr. Ahmed Abdelkader, Dr. Ahmed Ezzat, Dr. Ghada Atef, and Dr. Samar Ali, all specialists in physical therapy and rehabilitation.
The championship witnessed the participation of 21 African nations, all vying to secure vital points for qualification to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
