Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed in Tuesday the league’s solidarity with Lebanon and the Lebanese people during the difficult times the country is experiencing. Aboul Gheit called on the international community to stand with the Lebanese in facing Israeli aggressions and their repercussions, especially those targeting civilian areas. Jamal Rushdi, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that “Aboul Gheit is deeply concerned about the developments in Lebanon, believing in the Lebanese people’s ability to maintain civil peace and avoid any sectarian strife.”
Aboul Gheit clearly condemned the ongoing Israeli assaults on Lebanon, which have resulted in hundreds of deaths and about a million displaced people, emphasizing that such violation of sovereignty could widen the conflict. The Secretary-General added that “a diplomatic solution is still possible under Resolution 1701, which the Lebanese government has repeatedly committed to.” He conveyed Aboul Gheit’s affirmation that the Lebanese people have suffered greatly in recent years and need support more than ever to overcome this perilous phase.
