Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has expressed strong condemnation of the United States’ use of veto power to block a resolution proposed by Algeria, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons.
Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, conveyed Aboul Gheit’s deep regret that this marks the third instance since the outbreak of the crisis where the US intervened to thwart a resolution aimed at halting the hostilities, clearly implicating the US in bearing both political and moral responsibility for the continuation of the Israeli war on the enclave.
Aboul Gheit highlighted that the US stance detracts from the credibility of the United Nations system and exacerbates the paralysis currently witnessed within the UN, effectively providing Israel with a political cover to continue its aggression amidst international incapacity to halt the heinous crimes committed daily against Palestinian civilians.
Rushdi added that the resolution represented a balanced stance prioritizing humanitarian dimensions and the rescue of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians vulnerable to the Israeli killing machinery, and susceptible to starvation and disease if the war persists.
The United States, employing its veto power, once again obstructed an Algerian-drafted resolution in the UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons.
Thirteen members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of the resolution, with the US opposing it, and only the United Kingdom abstaining.
The resolution demanded “an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons to be respected by all parties,” along with the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees. It also called for the full implementation of resolutions 2712 and 2720 adopted on October 7, 2023, concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
