Algeria has called for an open session of the UN Security Council on 12 January to address Israeli threats of forcibly displacing Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

The move comes in response to reports that Israel’s coalition, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is engaging in secret contacts to facilitate the migration of thousands of Gazans to countries such as Congo and other African nations.

Netanyahu, in a Likud Party meeting, acknowledged working towards the voluntary migration of Gaza residents to other countries, citing the need to find nations willing to absorb the population.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, heading the Religious Zionism party, emphasized the goal of maintaining control over Gaza and suggested encouraging the approximately 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza to leave.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, a prominent figure in Israeli settlement efforts, asserted that promoting a solution encouraging the migration of Gazans is essential for achieving security.

The situation raises concerns about the potential displacement of Palestinians and the broader implications for the Gaza Strip.
