Lebanon’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for firm international backing for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and demanded that Israel cease its hostile actions against the peacekeeping force.

In an official statement issued on Monday, and after consultations with the Speaker of Parliament and the Prime Minister, the ministry expressed its “deep gratitude” to UNIFIL for its role in maintaining peace and security in southern Lebanon since its establishment in 1978.

The ministry also praised the force’s efforts in contributing to local development, which helps stabilize the region and supports Lebanese citizens in remaining on their land.

The Foreign Ministry extended its thanks to the friendly nations contributing troops and resources to UNIFIL, acknowledging their commitment to ensuring the mission’s success.

“These countries share Lebanon’s belief in the United Nations’ principles and its role in promoting international peace and security,” the statement noted.

The ministry strongly condemned Israel’s repeated attacks on UNIFIL personnel and bases, including demands from Israel to evacuate certain UNIFIL posts.

The statement described these actions as clear violations of international law and humanitarian law, warning that such aggressions could amount to war crimes.

It further highlighted Israel’s ongoing refusal to comply with UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 1701, which outlines measures to prevent hostilities in the region.

In conclusion, Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry urged the international community to take a decisive stance in supporting UNIFIL, ensuring its ability to continue its operations without threats or attacks. The ministry called for an immediate end to Israel’s aggressive actions towards the peacekeeping force and urged global condemnation of Israel’s violations.
