Four people were killed in Florida as tornadoes spun out ahead of Hurricane Milton, marking the first fatalities associated with the storm in the state.

Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida on Wednesday night as a Category 3 storm, making landfall in Siesta Key, roughly 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of Tampa.

The hurricane brought severe winds and torrential rain, sparking a barrage of tornadoes across western and central Florida.

Milton left significant devastation in its wake, including power outages affecting more than 3.2 million homes and businesses, according to poweroutage.us.

St. Petersburg recorded over 16 inches (41 centimeters) of rain, with the National Weather Service issuing flash flood warnings for the Tampa area and surrounding regions.

The storm compounded the damage caused earlier by Hurricane Helene, which had also recently hit the state, intensifying the emergency situation across Florida.
