US President Joe Biden and his senior aides have urged Israel to avoid direct attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities as part of its response to Tehran’s recent actions, according to a Politico report.
The US administration is focusing on limiting Israel’s response rather than discouraging it entirely, reflecting Biden’s diminishing influence over events in the Middle East.
While Biden has confirmed sanctions will be imposed on Iran, U.S. officials are coordinating with Israel on potential military responses, including strikes on Iran-backed militias or Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces in Syria and Yemen. The preferred approach is a “strategic but limited” response.
The dynamics in the Middle East have shifted significantly over the past six months, with Iran’s recent missile attack—closer to Israeli population centers—marking an escalation following Israel’s strikes on Hezbollah. Biden emphasized that while Israel has the right to respond, any action must be proportional.
The Politico report highlights the growing pressure from hardline Republicans calling for action against Iran, even as Biden attempts to preserve ceasefire agreements in the region.
