In a recent development, the Iranian Foreign Ministry called on United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to immediately condemn the desecration of the Quran and take measures to prevent any such actions from recurring in the future.

In a letter addressed to Guterres, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian expressed deep concern over the distressing news of renewed insults against the Quran in Sweden.

He emphasized that such acts have caused significant harm to the sentiments of Muslims and followers of other divine religions worldwide, spreading shock and concern among Muslims due to these disrespectful actions.

The foreign minister stressed that Iran strongly condemns the Swedish authorities for authorizing a second instance of this offense within the past month.

Abdollahian highlighted that the continuation of such actions poses serious risks to peace and peaceful coexistence among followers of different divine religions.

He urged the UN Secretary-General to swiftly condemn the desecration of the Quran and take necessary actions to prevent any recurrence of such provocative and offensive phenomena. Additionally, he called upon the UN member states to firmly deal with the leaders and perpetrators of such acts.

Earlier, Nasser Kanaani, the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, summoned the Swedish ambassador to Tehran and delivered a strongly worded protest memorandum regarding the Quran desecration incident in Stockholm.

Swedish police permitted individuals to protest and tear up a copy of the Quran and the Iraqi flag outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm.

It is worth noting that on June 28th of last year, the first day of Eid al-Adha, a demonstration was held outside the main mosque in Stockholm, where a copy of the Quran was burned.

The Swedish police also allowed this demonstration, prompting Swedish Prime Minister, Stefan Lofven, to remark that the approval was “legitimate but inappropriate.”

The burning of the Quran in Stockholm triggered condemnation worldwide, with Iraq demanding that the Swedish authorities hand over the immigrant responsible for the incident.

Numerous heads of state, as well as the Secretary-General of the Arab League and the President of the Gulf Cooperation Council, also denounced the incident.

As the situation continues to draw international attention and reactions, the Iranian government urges a firm response to protect the sanctity of religious beliefs and promote tolerance and understanding among diverse communities.
