Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has postponed a scheduled visit to the United Kingdom in early October, urging the international community to take responsibility for the ongoing crises in the region.
A brief statement from the Prime Minister’s media office indicated that the visit was deferred due to the evolving circumstances both regionally and internationally.
In this context, al-Sudani emphasized the need for major powers to act against the “genocide” perpetrated by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon.
The media office reported that the Prime Minister met with Thomas Seiler, the European Union Ambassador to Iraq, to discuss areas of cooperation between Iraq and EU nations, as well as to review the situation in the region amid the ongoing “Zionist aggression” against both Lebanon and Gaza.
During the meeting, al-Sudani expressed appreciation for the stance of Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, regarding the persistent aggression and attempts to escalate conflict in the Middle East.
He called on major powers to assume their responsibilities in preventing the serious and ongoing acts of genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people, noting that such brutal attacks have also extended to Lebanon.
Ambassador Seiler commended Iraq’s political positions on the international stage and its efforts toward de-escalation and preventing the conflict from widening, a sentiment that has been recognized among European nations.
In a related development, al-Sudani discussed regional conditions and the importance of strengthening Iraq’s internal front in light of potential developments with President Abdul Latif Rashid on Sunday evening.
According to an official statement, the meeting focused on the escalating war crimes against the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples. It underscored the necessity of unity and concerted international efforts to achieve an immediate halt to all forms of aggression against the two brotherly nations, aiming to establish genuine stability and ensure the safety and security of their citizens.
