In a tragic incident, an apartment building in the city of Recife, Brazil, has collapsed, resulting in the loss of at least eight lives, according to rescuers. Among the victims were two children, aged five and eight, whose lives were tragically cut short when the structure disintegrated on Friday. The exact cause of the collapse remains unclear, but Recife has recently experienced heavy rainfall, possibly contributing to the disaster.

Reports indicate that four individuals were rescued from the debris alive, while six others remain missing in the Janga neighborhood.

The collapse occurred in Recife’s Paulista suburb, where residents have referred to this type of four-storey building as a “coffin block” due to concerns over its substandard construction. Officials stated that the incident took place at approximately 06:35 local time on Friday (09:35 GMT), a time when many residents would have been asleep.

According to Globo news, the victims also included a 43-year-old mother and her 19-year-old son. The local governor issued a warning on Friday, stating that further rainfall was expected, urging residents to ensure they have access to safe structures.
