Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal are expected to announce a bipartisan bill on Thursday to classify Russia, Syria, and other countries as “state sponsors of terrorism” under US law.

The announcement will be made during a press conference held by the senators from South Carolina and Connecticut respectively.

The proposed legislation will be put to a vote starting next week, following distribution of a draft to members of both chambers of Congress.

According to the US classification, countries deemed as state sponsors of terrorism are those that have repeatedly provided support for international terrorism activities.

Countries currently designated as state sponsors of terrorism under US law include Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and potentially Russia if the new legislation is passed.
