Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has delivered a resolute response to Hamas’s demand for an end to the Gaza conflict before engaging in ceasefire negotiations. In a statement to the cabinet, Netanyahu categorically dismissed Hamas’s conditions, asserting that “Israel cannot accept this.”

Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to continuing the fighting until all of its objectives are met, underscoring a refusal to concede to what he perceives as Hamas’s terms of surrender. “Israel will not agree to Hamas’s demands, which mean surrender, and will continue the fighting until all its goals are achieved,” Netanyahu declared.

Despite Netanyahu’s stance, mediation efforts involving Qatar, Egypt, and the United States persist. A Hamas delegation met with Qatari, Egyptian, and American mediators in Cairo on Saturday, with indications of further talks scheduled for Sunday. However, Netanyahu has opted not to send a delegation at this stage, as reported by the Times of Israel.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh reiterated the group’s commitment to achieving a comprehensive ceasefire that addresses the root causes of the conflict. Emphasizing the need to end Israeli aggression, ensure Gaza’s liberation, and secure a significant captive exchange, Haniyeh outlined Hamas’s priorities in the negotiations.

As the standoff between Israel and Hamas continues, the prospects for a breakthrough remain uncertain. With both sides entrenched in their positions, the resumption of talks presents a crucial opportunity to bridge the divide and forge a path towards peace in Gaza.
