On Saturday evening, factions supported by Iran initiated a drone attack on the Koniko gas field base in Deir ez-Zor’s countryside in eastern Syria, which houses both U.S. and international coalition forces.
Local sources reported that the base’s ground defences successfully intercepted a drone attack that attempted to approach the facility, preventing any damage within the base.
This assault marks the first of its kind following the recent escalation in regional tensions and the exchange of airstrikes between Iran and Israel.
In anticipation of potential threats from groups loyal to Iran, American bases in northeastern Syria are currently on high alert.
Furthermore, on Saturday, U.S. forces, in collaboration with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), conducted live ammunition military drills at the Tal Baidar base in northern Hasakah.
The exercise included participation from both U.S. manned and unmanned aircraft.
The Koniko base, a significant location in the region, has been targeted in 35 attacks by pro-Iranian factions out of approximately 130 attacks on international coalition bases in Syria since the military escalation began in the Gaza Strip.
Earlier this month, the U.S. military base located in the Al-Tanf region, at the tri-border area of Syria, Iraq, and Jordan, was attacked by a suicide drone.
Ground defences at the base successfully intercepted the suicide drone in the battalion area, situated 4 kilometers away from the base, preventing any damage to the vicinity or inside the base itself.
