The United Nations’ Deputy Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Syria, David Carden, expressed concerns about the difficulties in securing sufficient funding for the Syria aid program this year.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Carden highlighted that inadequate funding would impact aid delivery and the UN and its partners’ ability to provide services.

Carden further mentioned that “last year, the Humanitarian Response Plan for Syria received less than 40% of the required $5.4 billion needed to cover its operations.”

He also noted that the funding in 2023 represented the “lowest” percentage since the inception of the UN’s response plans.

Additionally, the U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, reported that Damascus and Moscow are obstructing humanitarian aid access to the “Rukban” camp in southeast Syria. Wood emphasized the necessity for aid to reach all Syrians.
