In a meeting with a delegation from the US Congress, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi emphasized the pressing need to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, according to a statement released by the presidency on Wednesday. The Egyptian leader underscored the importance of taking responsible action to prevent the conflict in the region from escalating further.

President Sisi’s remarks come against the backdrop of ongoing mediation efforts led by Egypt and Qatar between Israel and Hamas, the militant group responsible for a deadly incursion into Israeli towns on October 7th, which triggered the current wave of hostilities.

Addressing the delegation, President Sisi highlighted the urgency of establishing a ceasefire as a top priority in order to bring a halt to the violence that has gripped the Gaza Strip. He urged all parties involved to engage in diplomatic efforts and responsible decision-making to ensure the protection of civilian lives and regional stability.

The statement from the presidency did not provide specific details on the discussions held with the US Congress delegation. However, it reiterated Egypt’s commitment to playing a constructive role in mediating a resolution to the conflict and promoting peace in the region.

The diplomatic involvement of Egypt and Qatar in facilitating talks between Israel and Hamas reflects the broader international concern over the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict. The nations involved in mediating efforts are striving to find common ground and foster a conducive environment for a sustainable ceasefire agreement.

As tensions persist in the region, global leaders and international organizations continue to monitor the situation closely, with a collective hope for a swift resolution to bring an end to the suffering of civilians and restore stability in Gaza.
