In a diplomatic effort to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken initiated discussions with Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), on Friday.

During the conversation, Secretary Blinken underscored the pivotal role of the ICRC in responding to the humanitarian needs arising from the conflict in Gaza. The Secretary and President Egger delved into the collaborative initiatives aimed at reinforcing protections for civilians and facilitating the expanded delivery of humanitarian aid across Gaza.

A key focus of the discussion was Secretary Blinken’s reiterated call for the immediate release of all hostages, emphasizing the urgency of granting the ICRC access to those still held captive.

Blinken expressed gratitude to the ICRC for its crucial role in providing life-saving assistance and ensuring the protection of civilians amid the crisis.

The dialogue comes at a critical juncture, as the United States faces scrutiny for its decision to block a UN resolution advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The delicate balance between urging protective actions and maintaining a crucial alliance with Israel remains a central theme in the ongoing discussions surrounding the Gaza crisis.
